Working Together for Student Success
We have now passed the half way mark in the school year and it has been a busy and positive year so far. Students and staff are working hard to meet learning goals for the year, and we know the same is true for families. The support you give your children by being sure they are well nourished, rested, and have their homework done is essential to their success. It is no easy task and we appreciate your efforts as we all work together to help our students learn and grow.
In an effort to give students some extra learning time, our third, fourth and fifth graders have a new session of Title 1 after school support classes beginning. If your child has received an invitation, (92 were sent home with students and 48 were returned), please be sure that you fill out and return the paperwork for these classes. It is helpful also to remind your child to attend the classes regularly. This is an opportunity for some extra help with essential skills of language learning, reading, and writing.
Extra support from Title 1 in English Language Arts is offered to our kindergarten through third graders on a daily basis. Mrs. Campbell, our Title 1 Teacher, along with our Title 1 and Bilingual Paraprofessionals, work with the regular classroom teachers to identify students’ needs. The students are instructed in small groups during one period each day in an effort to help them master needed reading, writing and language skills. Title 1 also offers after school intervention classes to third, fourth and fifth graders by teacher recommendation.
STAR Testing on the Horizon
Each year in the early spring the State of California requires that all 2nd through 11th graders take part in testing to measure academic progress. These tests are important measures of our school’s progress. It is important that we all make an effort to help our students do their very best. We have established our testing dates for this year and hope that everyone will work to be sure that students are present, rested and positive when testing time arrives. Mark your calendars for the week of April 2 – 11, after spring break, for this year’s testing period. Fourth Grade Writing Test is March 4th with make-up testing on March 5th.

Ya hemos pasado la media marca del año escolar y hasta hoy ha sido un año positivo y muy ocupado y sabemos que lo mismo es verdad para las familias. El apoyo que ud. le de a sus hijos/as asegurándose que estén bien alimentados, descansados y terminen su tarea esto es esencial para su éxito. Esta tarea no será fácil y apreciamos sus esfuerzos mientras todos trabajemos juntos para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes aprender y crecer.
En esfuerzo para dar ayuda adicional a los estudiantes para aprender. Comenzaremos una nueva sesión de clases después de la escuela de Titulo 1 para los estudiantes de tercer, cuarto y quinto grado. Si su hijo/a ha recibido una invitación, (se mandaron 92 invitaciones a casa con los estudiantes y hemos recibido 48) por favor asegúrese de completar y regresar el papel para estas clases. Ayúdele a su hijo/a de recordarles que asistan a estas clases regularmente. Esta es una oportunidad para obtener ayuda adicional con destrezas esenciales en su aprendizaje de lenguaje, lectura y escritura.
Ayuda adicional de Titulo 1 se ofrecen en las clases de kinder a tercero grado diariamente. La Sra. Exam de STAR en el Horizonte
Cada año al principio de la primavera el estado de California requiere que todo grado de segundo hasta onceavo tomen parte de este examen para medir el progreso académico. Estos exámenes son medidas importantes para el progreso de nuestra escuela. Es importante que todos hagamos un esfuerzo ayudar a los estudiantes hacer lo mejor. Hemos establecido la fecha de exámenes para este ano y esperemos que todos trabajemos juntos para asegurar que los estudiantes estén presentes, descansados y positivos para cuando legue la hora de el examen. Marquen sus calendarios para la semana del 2 al 11 de abril después de las vacaciones de primavera, durante el periodo del examen de este año.
El Examen de Escritura para el cuarto grado es el 4 de marzo. Los que estén ausentes este día podrán recuperar este examen el 5 de marzo.

STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES
ESPARTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Guardians,
In order to better insure the safety of our students during drop off and pick up in the front parking lot, please follow this procedure:
- When you enter the lot, pull up to the curb and get in line. Please, do not get out of your car. Stay in the line and move up as soon as space becomes available so that cars entering from the street can get in behind you.
- Do not double-park behind cars in the angle parking or next to cars in the line at the curb.
- Students will be loaded from the south end of the lot. A “Crossing Guard/Valet” will open the door and your student will be loaded from the curb side so that you do not have to get out of your car. When your students are loaded, check for traffic, pull out, and proceed to the exit.
- If you have business to do inside the school, need to meet your student at the classroom door, or wish to visit with friends, please park in the new lot located on Grafton Street.
The school staff will make every effort to get students quickly out to the line up area so that the pick up line moves quickly.
We will monitor how this system works and make changes if need be to make the process as safe and efficient as possible. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this effort to keep our students safe.

Por favor siga el siguiente procedimiento para asegurar el bien estar de nuestros estudiantes al dejar y levantar en el estacionamiento de enfrente:
1. Al entrar al lote, acérquese al la curva y forme una línea. Favor de no salir de su vehiculo. Permanezca en línea y cuando haiga espacio en frente acérquese al vehiculo de en frente para que el vehiculo que vaya entrando de la calle este detrás de usted.
2. No se estacione detrás o al lado de otros vehículos Que ya están parqueados.
3. Los estudiantes abordaran el sur del lote. Un guardián crucero abrirá la puerta y su estudiante se subirá cerca de la curva para que así no se tenga que salir de su usted. Cuando suba su hijo/a fíjese que no haiga trafico y proceda salir con cuidado.
4. Si por algún motivo tenga que entrar a la escuela, si tiene que esperar a su hijo/a a la salida de su clase, hablar con alguien por favor de estaciónese en la calle Grafton en el estacionamiento nuevo.
El personal de la escuela hará todo lo posible para que los estudiantes se formen rápidamente para así se despeje el estacionamiento rápidamente. Gracias por su cooperación.

Special Education Self-Review Invitation
The Esparto School District invites you to a meeting for parents and guardians of special education students. Esparto Elementary School has registered with Raley's Quality of Life Program. This is a cost-free fundraising opportunity for our school. The money goes directly to Student Body Funds.
We have received five Quality of Life Program Cards to give to interested Raley's shoppers. Please come by the office to get a card. According to Raley's, shoppers simply register their card on-line and present it at the check stand. It costs you nothing and Esparto Elementary School will receive a check quarterly based on a percentage of the purchases. Thank you!

Some Things to Remember
- Students are highly discouraged from walking to or from school alone. If your child does not have a sibling to walk to school with, perhaps there is a child who lives nearby with whom your child could walk to school.
- Does your child ride his/her bicycle to school? Remember it is the law that students have their helmets on at all times. Does your child have a lock for his/her bicycle? A lock can keep your child’s bike from getting stolen.
- Have you checked our LOST AND FOUND? There are many, many jackets that have found their way to this cupboard. There are days when 8-10 jackets are left lying around the playground, and end up in lost and found.
- Have you returned your Emergency School Closure form to school? This gives staff an idea of your wishes in the event that we have to close school for an emergency.
- Are you checking to make sure that your child’s homework is done daily or weekly? This is an important thing that parents can do to help their children be successful in school. It also helps children learn good habits early in life.
- Do you have a new phone number at home or work? Do you wish to add or delete names on the emergency cards of your children? Please contact our office. It has been unfortunate that we were not able to reach the parents of many students who have become ill at school because there were changes in their numbers and they did not inform us.

- ¿Han revisado lo perdido y lo encontrado? Hay muchas chaquetas en este armario. Hay días en que se encuentran hasta 8 y 10 chaquetas tiradas por el patio de recreo y terminan en lo perdido y encontrado.
- ¿Han devuelto a la escuela la forma de emergencia y la forma de cierre de emergencia de la escuela? Esto le da al personal de la escuela una idea de los sus deseos en caso de se tenga que cerrar la escuela por alguna emergencia.
- ¿Se están asegurando de que su hijo(a) haga y complete su tarea diaria ó semanal? Esto es algo muy importante que los padres pueden hacer para ayudar a que su hijo(a) tenga éxito en la escuela. Esto también ayuda a que su hijo(a) aprenda buenos hábitos temprano en la vida.
- ¿Tiene número telefónico nuevo de trabajo ó en la casa? ¿Quiere agregar ó borrar nombres a la forma de emergencia de su hijo(a) de la escuela? Por favor comuníquese con la oficina. Ha sido muy desafortunado que no nos hayamos podido comunicar con los padres de muchos estudiantes que se han enfermado en la escuela por no haber sido informados de los cambios en números telefónicos.
ATTENDANCE A
- School attendance is mandatory for minor children.
- Absences and late arrivals are tracked daily.
- If your child is sick, he/she should be kept home. Please phone the school, (787-3417), to report the reason for his/her absence or send a note upon his/her return to school.
- The Attendance Office will send you a letter if your child's absences or late arrivals become what are considered excessive. ("Excused" absences of more than 10 days per school year and/or three unexcused absences; three late arrivals over 30 minutes or numerous late arrivals under 30 minutes, excused or not or any combination of the above).
- You could be required to attend a meeting with the School Attendance Review Board after you have received three attendance letters.
- In order for your child to benefit from the education offered here, he/she must be here. The teachers are offering new information daily. Teaching starts when the bell rings first thing in the morning and continues all day. Late arrivals, regardless of the reason, interrupt the class and cause your child to miss important instruction.
- Absences and late arrivals are discussed in the Esparto Elementary School Student Handbook. Attendance is discussed at length in the California Education Code. Ed. Code is available on-line. If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the office.
ASISTENCIA A
- Asistencia a la escuela es mandataria para niños(as) menores de edad. Las ausencias y las tardanzas se archivan diariamente.
- Si su niño(a) está enfermo debe quedarse en casa. Llame a la oficina de la escuela (787-3417) para avisar la razón de la ausencia ó envíe una nota con su niño(a) cuando regrese a la escuela. La oficina de la asistencia le enviará una carta si su niño(a) ha tenido ausencias ó tardanzas que sean consideradas excesivas. (Inasistencias excusadas por más de 10 días durante el año escolar ó 3 inasistencias sin excusa ó 3 tardanzas de más de 30 minutos ó muchas tardanzas por debajo de 30 minutos ó una combinación de lo ya mencionado)
- Después de haber recibido tres cartas por motivo de inasistencias ó tardanzas se le puede exigir que asista a una junta con la mesa directiva de revisiones de asistencia.
- Para que su niño(a) se pueda beneficiar de la educación que se le ofrece aquí el/ella tiene que estar aquí. Los maestros(as) enseñan información nueva todos los días. La enseñanza comienza cuando suena la campana en la mañana y continúa durante todo el día. Las tardanzas, sin importar la razón, interrumpen la clase y ocasionan que su hijo(a) pierda información importante.
- Las inasistencias y las tardanzas se explican en el Manual del estudiante de la escuela Primaria de Esparto. La asistencia también se explica más ampliamente en el Código de Educación de California disponible en internet. Si usted tiene mas preocupaciones ó preguntas por favor comuníquese a la oficina de la escuela.
ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
ATTENDANCE
All students need to be in school daily. It is very important to learning that students do not miss any academic time. Please try to schedule doctor’s appointments after school, and vacations during school holidays. We are committed to providing a quality education for all students, and regular attendance in school is one way to be sure that your child will learn what is needed to be a success in school and in life.
Students absent more than 3 days without valid excuse (doctor appointments, illness or death in the family) or absent 10 days or more for any reason are considered TRUANT and will be subject to the School Attendance Review Board process. Thank you for informing us about the reason your child is absent. However, this may not always be considered an excused absence.
PROCEDURE FOR ATTENDANCE
All students who arrive after the school day begins must check in at the office for a Tardy Slip prior to going to the classroom.
Students checking out during the school day for appointments, etc., must have a parent signed note and must check out at the office. It is preferable that a parent pick up a child who is checking out early from school at the office after checking the student out of school.
ABSENCES VERIFICATIONS
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT A NOTE OF VERIFICATION BE WRITTEN BY THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN AND SENT TO SCHOOL ON THE STUDENT'S FIRST DAY BACK FROM AN ABSENCE. You may call the office at 787-3417 on the morning of your student's absence and notify the school secretary of the reason for the absence.
Absences that are without valid excuse (for doctor appointments, illness, or death in the family) will be considered as unexcused. A letter to this effect will be sent to the parent after the 3rd unexcused absence. It is most important that the students be in school every day and only absent when absolutely necessary.
A normal expectation of absences for medically related reasons is no more than (10) ten days for the entire school year. If a student is absent more frequently, it is considered to be an excessive absence and needs to be verified by a health professional. More absences than this for any reason will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board of the District.
In either of the above cases of absences that are unexcused or excessive, the student will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board of the District.
Family vacations during the school year are recorded as unexcused absences. For vacations from 5 days to two weeks, the parents may request an Independent Study Contract for their child(ren). The application for this must be obtained from the school office one week prior to departure. Students on Independent Study Contracts will be assigned schoolwork by teachers and will receive credit for the work done, providing it is returned to the school the day that the student returns to school from the absence. It is to be noted that the work done is in no way a replacement for the learning a child gains in school.

Todos los estudiantes que lleguen a la escuela después de que comience el día escolar DEBEN dirigirse a la oficina para ser registrados antes de ir al salón de clases.
Los estudiantes saliendo durante horas escolares para citas, etc., deberán tener una nota firmada y deberán avisar en la oficina antes de salir. Es preferible que un padre/madre/guardian recoja de la escuela al alumno que va a salir temprano de la oficina.
VERIFICACIONES DE AUSENCIA
ES ESENCIAL QUE LOS PADRES O GUARDIANES ESCRIBAN UNA NOTA DE VERIFICACION DE AUSENCIA Y QUE DICHA NOTA SEA ENVIADA CON EL ESTUDIANTE EL PRIMER DIA QUE REGRESE A CLASES. Ustedes pueden llamar a la oficina al 787-3417 la mañana del día de la ausencia para notificarle a la secretaria la razón de la ausencia.
Las ausencias que son sin excusa valida (cita del doctor, enfermedad, o muerte en la familia) serán consideradas como no-excusadas. Se mandará una carta a los padres después de la tercera ausencia no-excusada. Es muy importante que los estudiantes vengan a la escuela lo todos los días y que sólo se ausenten cuando sea absolutamente necesario.
Una expectativa normal de ausencias por razones relacionadas médicas son, no mas de (10) diez días por el año escolar entero. Si el alumno esta ausente mas frecuente, es considerado de ser una ausencia excesiva y necesita ser verificada por un profesional de salud. Ausencias que exidan mas de esto serán referidos al SARB (Mesa de Revisión de Asistencia Escolar) del Distrito. En cualquier de los casos mencionados arriba que son no excusados o excesivos, el alumno será referido a la Mesa de Revisión de Asistencia Escolar del Distrito.
Vacaciones de familia durante el año escolar son archivadas como ausencias no excusadas. Los padres pueden pedir un contrato de Estudio Independiente para sus hijos para vacaciones de 5 días a dos semanas. Esta aplicación debe ser obtenida en la oficina escolar por lo menos una semana antes de la salida. Alumnos en contrato de estudio independiente serán asignados tarea escolar por el maestro y recibirá crédito por el trabajo hecho provenido que sea entregado a la escuela el mismo día que el alumno regrese a la escuela de la ausencia. Seguridad Escolar
La seguridad de todos los niños(as) de la escuela es una prioridad número uno para todo el personal de la Escuela Primaria de Esparto. La vigilancia de los varios frentes por maestros(as), supervisores de patios y el personal en todas sus capacidades nos asegura que este es un lugar seguro para cada estudiante. Haciendo que nuestra escuela sea un lugar seguro sucede de varias maneras:
Los estudiantes siempren están supervisados en el patio de recreos y durante su estadía en la escuela por miembros adultos de nuestro personal. Los maestros(as) supervisan los autobuses cuando los estudiantes se van de regreso a casa. Los maestros(as) permanecen con sus clases durante todo el tiempo excepto durante los recesos/recreos y durante el almuerzo. Los estudiantes son cuidados y supervisados por supervisores del patio de recreo que la escuela contrata.
- Tenemos un programa de patrulleros que ayuda a los estudiantes con el cruce de la calle Omega después de la escuela. Por favor obedezca a los patrulleros y use el cruce de peatones ambos lados de la escuela.
- En cooperación con el Departamento de Mantenimiento y de Operaciones hemos desarrollado planes de emergencia para prácticas de incendio y el “código rojo” (que es cuando puede haber la necesidad de cerrar con llave la escuela). Estas instrucciones están anunciadas en cada salón de clase y en la oficina. Las instrucciones en caso de terremotos también están incluidas.
- El personal del Departamento de Mantenimiento y de Operaciones es muy receptivo a las necesidades de nuestra escuela y son muy vigilantes en el cuidado y la seguridad de todos nuestros estudiantes.
- Estamos constantemente tratando de mejorar el “ambiente de juego” en el patio de recreo para minimizar heridas y disputas.
- Nuestro programa de coordinadores de conflictos entrena estudiantes del 4to y el 5to grado para mediar discusiones o desacuerdos simples entre estudiantes en el patio de recreo. Disputas o discusiones mas serias, problemas y acidentes son dirigidos a las supervisoras del patio de recreo, maestros(as), la oficina y/o la directora.
- Ningún comportamiento violento será tolerado en ninguna de sus formas ya sea en acciones, por escrito o verbal. Medidas apropiadas se toman cuando estudiantes se han violentado de alguna manera. Afortunadamente este no es un problema serio en nuestra escuela.
- Cualquier comportamiento que simule o parezca de tipo pandillero no será tolerado: cualquier ropa que simbolice a pandillas, o cualquier señal o marcas que sean de tipo pandillero no serán permitidas. A los estudiantes se les enseña y motiva a que respeten a los demás.
- El Departamento del Alguacil del Condado de Yolo ha sido muy receptivo con problemas que hemos tenido. Tenemos una buena relación de trabajo con el Departamento del Alguacil.
- Para la seguridad de todos les pedimos cualquier persona que entre a nuestro recinto estudiantil firme en la oficina y reciba el pase (etiqueta) de visitante. Nuestro personal reporta a adultos presentes que no tengan pase de visitantes.
- La supervisión en la escuela comienza a las 7:30 a.m. ningún estudiante debe estar en la escuela antes de esta hora. Los estudiantes deben caminar a la escuela y a la casa con alguien más.
- Por favor asegúrese de que la forma de emergencia de cierre de la escuela que ya ha sido enviada a su casa varias veces sea completada y devuelta a la escuela lo antes posible. Ocasionalmente tenemos una emergencia en la escuela debido a circunstancias fuera de nuestro control y frecuentemente es debido a la falta de luz. En estas circunstancias la escuela no cuenta con teléfono que funcionen. Queremos asegurarnos de que todos los estudiantes lleguen a sus casas seguros y hacemos todo el esfuerzo para que sea así.
School Safety
The safety of all children in our school is a top priority of the entire staff at Esparto Elementary School. Vigilance on several fronts by teachers, yard duty supervisors, and staff in all capacities at our school ensures that this is a safe place for each child. Making our school a safe place happens in several ways:
- Students are always supervised by adult staff members on the playground, and while they are at school. Teachers monitor the buses after school as students leave for the day. Teachers are with their classes at all times except during recesses and lunchtime. Yard duty supervisors are hired to monitor and manage our students on the playground.
- We have a crossing guard program that assists students crossing Omega Street after school. Please obey the crossing guards and use the cross walks on either side of the school.
- Together with the Maintenance and Operations Department we have developed emergency plans for fire
- drills, and “Code Red” drills (which are when we might have a need to lock down the school). These directions are posted in every classroom and office. Earthquake drills are also included.
- The staff in the Maintenance and Operations Department is very responsive to our needs as a school and are also vigilant for the care and safety of all of our students. This is true even with all of the staff cutbacks we have had.
- We are constantly trying to improve the “play atmosphere” on the playground to minimize injuries and disputes.
- Our Conflict Manager program utilizes trained 4th and 5th grade students to mediate simple disputes between students on the playground. More serious disputes, problems and accidents are directed to the Yard Duty Supervisors, teachers, the office and/or the principal.
- Violent behavior in any form: actions, writing or words are not tolerated. Appropriate measures are used when any student is found to have been violent toward another.
Fortunately, this is not a serious problem at our school.
- Any gang “want to be” behavior is not allowed: any clothing that signifies gang attire, or any signs or markings that claim gang allegiance are not allowed.
- Students are taught and encouraged to respect others.
- The Yolo County Sheriff’s Department has been very responsive to any problems we have had. We have a good working relationship with the Sheriff’s Department.
- For the safety of all, we ask that anyone entering our campus sign in at the front office and receive a visitor’s badge. Our staff does report adults on campus without this badge.

- Please be sure that the Emergency School Closure form that has been sent home several times has been returned to school. Occasionally, there is an emergency school closure due to circumstances beyond our control and often it is due to a power outage. In this circumstance the school has no phones. We want to make sure that all students arrive home safely and make every effort to do this.
