The United States Department of Education (USDE) announced Esparto Middle School as one of 255 schools (only 30 middle/65 total secondary schools) in the nation to receive the coveted 2004-05 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award.
Schools are evaluated on "sustained" academic growth and excellence over a three to five year period. They must meet state and federal academic benchmarks as well as exhibiting the following:
1. Establish a vision of high expectations and planning process to acheive it.
2. Incorporate the use of "best practices" to improve student
performance.
3. Continually use assessment data to improve student and school performance and communicate that information to students, parents and community members.
4. Engage students in art, foreign language and exploratory classes.
5. Make reading, English, language development and math top
priorities.
6. Possess an understanding of differentiated instruction.
7. Provide staff development.
8. Meet the needs of all students, including those with high ability.
9. Meeting the national benchmark of students scoring "proficient" in reading and math in all major subcategories (socio-economically disadvantaged for example) for at least three consecutive years).
According to USDE Secretary, Rod Paige, "Blue Ribbon schools are ones that are meeting our mission to ensure every child learns and no child is left behind. Blue Ribbon recipients will be national models of excellence that others can learn from." Schools have to either be in the top 10% of the state's test scores or in the category for which EMS was honored (having a student body comprised of at least forty percent disadvantaged students and showing dramatic academic improvement with students performing at the 55th percentile or better in reading and math.) EMS has a 57% disadvantaged student population.
